It started with an emergency. A child on the mainland had appendicitis, and Rodney needed an excuse to test his modifications to the Jumper. That was a white-knuckle trip, to be sure. They wound up having to stay the night, in the tiny spare cabin the Athosians on the mainland had erected specifically for such a purpose.

“Oh my god,” Rodney would later proclaim with a look of horror. “We reenacted that scene from ‘Brokeback Mountain’!”

“You saw Brokeback Mountain?”

A year later, it had become a monthly thing. The two of them escaped to the mainland for a weekend and stayed in that same cabin. “Their” cabin, if you listened to the Athosians; the cloth-sided hut that filled itself with ocean sounds every night - and a few other kinds of sounds, too.

Carson lay sleeping, tucked into Rodney’s arm, breathing gently. Rodney kissed his forehead gently and watched as he stirred a bit, looked up with half-awake eyes.

“Wuh?”

“Nothing,” Rodney murmured. “Go back to sleep.” Perfectly happy to comply, Carson squirmed back down into the crook of Rodney’s arm.

“Wish I knew how to quit you,” he mumbled. Rodney snorted.

“No you don’t.”

“You’re right. I don’t.”

And he drifted back to sleep, Rodney following soon after, breathing in time with each other and the ocean.
